Auditions for the Bachelor’s Degree in Dance at the University of the Americas Puebla

When considering attending a university program in Dance it is important to do some research. Look around. Ask questions. Each program is different. Make sure you know what each programs vision is in order to identify the program that most effectively suits your needs. What we are looking for at the University of the Americas Puebla are students with: a passion for learning and exploring, self-motivation and discipline, a love of dance, talent, creativity, and a willingness to engage with new ideas.

Preparing for the audition

To sign-up for an audition, e-mail us at ray.schwartz@udlap.mx. Please include the date in which you wish to audition, your address, phone number, email, and where you are in the application process to the UDLAP.

Complete and submit the questionnaire below and send it to us or bring it with you on the day of your audition. In the months prior to the audition, you should be attending classes regularly. You want to be in your best dancing shape. If you have access to contemporary dance, you should take some, if not: take ballet and/or jazz technique classes.

Get plenty of rest prior to the audition.

Eat breakfast the day of the audition and bring a snack. Low blood sugar can hold you back from your best performance.

The altitude in Puebla is very high, It is important to drink water so you are hydrated during the audition.

Come prepared on the day of the audition with:

Clothing: Come to the audition with comfortable clothing that allows you to move and permits us to see your body and appreciate the possibilities and capacities of each candidate.

Women should wear leotard and tights, unitard or dancewear that allows us to see your body. Men please wear tights and tee-shirt or dance wear that allows us to see your body.

Bring ballet shoes to wear during the ballet barre. The modern center is barefoot.

Solo: Bring a choreographed solo 1-2 minutes in length, in any style that can be repeated. (we may ask you to present it more than one time). The solo may be choreographed by you or by another choreographer. We have facilities to play cd’s and ipods.

Questionnaire: Bring the questionnaire filled out and come prepared to explain more amply some of your responses during your interview

Interview: Come prepared to participate in an individual interview with the the audition panel, which will be formed by the faculty of the dance program.

Suggestions

Approach the audition with a positive, open attitude. Avoid letting mistakes throw you. We are not looking for perfection. We are a school, and as such we are interested in your attitude towards learning. What we want to find out is if you are right for this school and we want you to find out if this school is right for you.

*Note: Students come to the UDLAP auditions with very different histories of experience in dance improvisation. Do not let it stop you from coming to the audition. Come with an open heart and a willingness to explore

To aid us in the selection process of candidates for the Bachelor’s Degree in Dance we would appreciate it if you would respond to the following questions:

What have been your academic studies (high school, special courses, workshops, etc.)? When did or will you graduate from high school?

What kinds of Dance have you studied? Where, with whom and for how long?

Why are you interested in the pursuing a degree a in dance? (Please elaborate your answer to this question with a statement of motivation no longer than 4 paragraphs)

Why are you interested in the UDLAP for this degree program?

What abilities do you hope to develop during your studies?

When you finish your degree what do you hope to do?

How do you describe what dance is for you?

What current dance artist/s do you like, have an interest in, admire, or has influenced your development?

Describe three challenges/weaknesses and three strengths that characterize your personality.

In which subjects did you excel and which subjects did you have difficulties with in your high school career?

In what extra-curricular projects have you been involved?

Have you ever developed a project with your own initiative. If so, can you describe what you did.

Audition Day Schedule

11:30-12:00 -Registration and arrival,

12:00 – 12:30 – overview of the program, questions and answers. (family members may be present for this discussion)

12:30-15:00 – Audition Class/presentation of choreographies/interviews (family members may not be present for this part of the audition process)

***When you arrive into Puebla, if you are taking a bus or plane, please take a taxi directly to the UDLAP

In CAPU (the main bus station of Puebla) there are secure taxi services that leave directly from the station. Look for the kiosks that say TAXI and the colors yellow and black. You will come up to a window, tell the person your destination, pay the fee, and then you will receive a receipt. From there you are directed to the taxi station, leaving out to the left, you will encounter another kiosk where you will give your receipt in order to be assigned a taxi. You will be given a card which you give to the taxi driver. There are also taxis from 4 Poniente (the airport bus station). These can be found right as you get off the bus.

Look on the left hand column and find the Agora at the beginning of the list.
